In a world riven with strife and conflict, South Africa’s emergence like a butterfly from the chrysalis of its solitude and isolation is a great story of the triumph of the human spirit. In Africa, there is an indigenous philosophy, known as ubuntu, which describes the paramount importance of human relationships. Simply translated, ubuntu means ‘I am a person because of other people’, a remarkable statement that sums up in a single phrase the impetus behind the country’s magnificent act of reconciliation and the creation of its much admired new democracy.
One of the major personalities of the anti-apartheid struggle, Bishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, coined the truly evocative name ‘the rainbow nation’ for this ‘new South Africa’, the place emerging from many decades on the world’s front pages as a country of sorrow and conflict. Many nations have a rich kaleidoscope of cultures, but this rainbow nation is rare, for those remarkable political solutions have been actively crafted by, and for, South Africans themselves, with thought and provision for every citizen, wherever on the social, cultural or religious spectrum they might be. After only one short decade, South Africa has burst upon the world stage in an explosion of exuberance in virtually every field of creative endeavor. There is no more rewarding experience in travel today than to see, touch, feel and taste this firsthand, and to plunge right into the heart of the ongoing celebration.

CLIMATE
The northern parts of South Africa are best between May and September when wildlife and game viewing at its best, and with very mild temperatures and little rainfall, make this generall the best time to visit. The southern parts are best between October and March where low rainfall and the temperature reaching in excess 28ºC means beautiful sunny days are plentiful, but the cool breeze of the Atlantic Ocean brings much sought relief along the coastal areas. The warm waters of the east coast make for almost year-round swimming with mild Winters in all but the highest parts of the country.
