The regions of Gauteng and the Free State together form the literal and metaphorical heart of the diverse land that is South Africa. The two provinces, though very different in some ways (the Free State is intensely rural, a land of huge spaces and infinite horizons, whilst Gauteng is the dynamic, urban, go-getting industrial engine of the entire region), have a great deal in common. Together, before the great gold discovery of 1886, these regions comprised a continuous, flattish plain, formed through the gradual erosion of huge pre-historic mountain ranges.
Underneath the seemingly dull surface, however, lie unimaginable quantities of gold which still remain today, even after over 100 years of deep-level gold mining. The remarkable Witwatersrand goldfields are the remains of a primordial inland sea into which ancient rivers carrying the gold particles emptied, as if into a collecting bowl. The goldfields span both provinces, and though the largest concentration of mines occurs within Gauteng, the Free State has some of the most modern and largest operations. The precious gold ore is sent to the Rand Refinery, the world’s largest gold refinery, near bustling Johannesburg for processing. The great megalopolis of Johannesburg, encompassing a host of industrial satellite towns, is the economic dynamo of the country, whilst the Free State retains its ‘olde worlde’ feel, a place of reflection sought after by artists and which offers great beauty and solitude. The two provinces, so similar in origin yet so different in experience, offer an intriguing and convenient travel combination.
